Alpina Automobiles was founded by Burkard Bovensiepen, who has been the CEO of Alpina Auto since 1965 and has not resigned even after over 40 years at his company. Previous to 1965, Alpina produced high quality office machinery and typewriters. Mr. Bovensiepen carried over his engineering and machining expertise, and started working in the BMW tuning scene in 1965. Alpina started with 6 employees machining carburetors and revising cylinder heads. Five years later the company grew and increased their staff to 70 employees. In the 1970’s Alpina ruled the European touring series, including a victory at the Spa-Francorchamps 24 hour endurance race.
The first production car Alpina made was the 1973 Alpina 2002 tii, a highly tuned version of the 2002 car that made BMW famous. A year or so later Alpina created the B2 3.0S. The B2 while being faster than its BMW counterpart also had better fuel consumption. Alpina put a big emphasis on fuel consumption as during the 1970's an oil crisis was occurring.
While AC Scnitzer, and Dinan simply tune BMW’s, Alpina actually creates their own distinct cars. It is very important to understand that Alpina’s are not modified BMW’s. Alpina is a stand alone car, manufactured with close cooperation with BMW. When you buy an Alpina, you should feel proud that you own a unique vehicle that has been developed by some of the greatest machinists and engineers to ever be involved with German vehicles. While you can get your Alpina serviced at BMW dealerships, but you are apart of an elite group of people who want something special, unique and expect more than the typical BMW driver.
My favourite Alpina is the E24 Alpina B7, a magnificent example of what Alpina can do to something that is almost perfect. This is a 6 series BMW with a turbocharger, upgraded suspension and a rebuilt engine with stronger internals. This car has enough power to light the tires up and spin doughnuts. You’ll have the privilege of the upgraded interior and unbelievable performance of an Alpina along with beautiful bodystyle of a 6 series BMW.
