In 1982 Mercedes premiered the W201 (190 Series). It was in 1983 when the first W201’s became available at the dealer. The 190E was known as the “Baby Benz”, but just because it’s smallest doesn’t mean it’s not over-engineered like the rest of the classes. This particular class of vehicle had hundreds of millions of dollars invested in its research and development. You can benefit from excellent fuel economy and not compromise luxury for a great price coupled with unbeatable reliability.

There is a variety of engines to choose from. My favourite engine package is the 2.3L-16 valve which develops 185 hp at 6200 rpm and a torque of 181 lb-ft at 4500 rpm, 0-60 in 7.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 230km/h. For the more touring inclined driver, you can also find this car in a fuel saving diesel which gets 26 mpg city, 31 highway.

For Mercedes this was the first vehicle class to feature a 5-link suspension which is still used in today’s Mercedes Benz cars. The 190 had front and rear anti-roll bars, and anti-dive, anti-squat geometry. ABS is a standard feature, as well as airbags and other safety features that are only starting to become standard with other car companies two decades later.

Years of research and development and cutting edge engineering eventually led to the 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II. This 16 valve DTM version, made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1990. This track-tuned version had quite a famous race history. It was no surprise that racer Klaus Ludwig was a successful competitor in 1992 when he raced with this car.
