Mercedes Benz S-Class (Luxury Flagship)
Written by Matt Krepinski (Enthusiast)
Elegance, power, and safety. This is what the S class continues to deliver year after year, with every generation. The S class is currently in it's 10th generation, which started production in the early 1950's. Originally this vehicle was known as the Ponton, but became the "S" when the vehicle required "Super" or "Premium fuel" for performance applications. This has always been the world's best selling luxury sedan flagship, but they never stopped striving for something better each year. Through advanced safety systems, drivetrain technologies, and interior features this car has remained safe and on top of its game. Notably, the S-Class introduced the first airbag supplemental restraint systems, seatbelt pretensioners, and electronic stability control.
When you first sit inside a W126 (1979-1990) or a W140 (1991-1999) you realize you're inside of a graceful tank. You will feel so sheltered from the outside world, but in regards to maneuvering and driving you'll feel so in touch with the road. It is very rare to find a large car that doesn't feel like you're trying to pilot a boat, the S class is very smooth and engineered to take advantage of it's large size. I can testify concerning the safety of the W140 Benz. My aunt was driving her S class, and we were t-boned at an intersection by a large 3500 series pickup truck. The driver of the truck had to be taken to the hospital. There was no doubt that the S class had been damaged, but I was fine and my aunt experienced only a friction burn from her air bag. The vehicle took all the damage, it didn't share it with the passengers.
The S class is the premier car for the big boss, royalty or ambassadors. It commands a presence, and since this is the first thing people see when you pull up they will know you mean business. This is the most expensive car Mercedes makes, you will benefit from the reliability and unparalleled luxury. Find me one car from the 1980's or the early 90's that has reclining heated back seats. This car has always been the pinnacle of luxury. Even a late 80's S class has features and extremely high quality interior that makes today's "high end" cars look unequipped and paltry. When purchasing this car, you become apart of a club of dignified and sophisticated enthusiasts who refuse to sacrifice decadent elegance for reliability. Every S class comes very well appointed, and additional options were few because Mercedes gave you everything you could need in a luxury car. You will appreciate the thick glass, high quality parts and assembly and the massive sun roof in the S class. The S class is very comfortable for long trips. This car is like driving a practical limo, if you are a realtor or someone who wants to leave a good first impression on clients and important people, this car will encapsulate them in the highest comfort, and get them to their destination safely.
This S class is usually presented as a sedan, but there are coupes available for some years. The S comes in various special editions, such as the Lorinser package, and an AMG edition. My personal favourite of all S class, is the 560SEC AMG which is the AMG edition coupe with a 5.6L V8.
Your options for powerplants in this car is an I6/V6, V8, V12 and a turbo diesel. Personally I would recommend the V8 or the Diesel. I find the I6 doesn't seem to have the right amount of power to give you an enjoyable experience, and the early V12's had some reliability issues. The I6 does a reasonable enough job, but you get more out of the car with the V8 or Diesel. The Diesel or V8 are the most reliable choices, and offer the richest experience. This car may seem like a fancy car for older people, but you can still do burnouts and if you have the window down you can hear a growl similar to a muscle car. This is one of the most sound proof vehicles out there, and you must crack your window to hear the motor in all its glory.
