Subaru Impreza WRX STi (GC8)
Written by Mike McComb (Enthusiast)
The WRX - a high performance version of an already high performing car. First introduced to Japan in 1992, the Impreza shared the same goal as the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo; to be an affordable, yet high performance vehicle.
Practical, but stylish and coupled with 240 hp, it proved a formidable foe for the groundbreaking Evo. The WRX comes standard with ventilated front and rear disk brakes, viscous-type centre differential, and viscous-type LSD. The two flat-4 engines available are both powerful for their size and was made famous by this car. Being a rally inspired car, four wheel drive is optional and is quite common among the Japanese, as it offered exceptional traction in all conditions. A race version is also available, designed to compete in Japanese touring car races, but it lacks the luxuries that most street cars have. Still, it achieved its original intention - to win.
In an attempt to help gain even more performance ground, Subaru introduced the WRX-STi version. It came with most of the features the WRX had, but with improved performance parts and a Driver Controlled Centre Differential. This comes in handy in less then adequate traction conditions when it locks the differential electronically. The STi only came with the 2.0L H4. It is unknown how many STis where produced by Subaru, but chances are it was fairly limited. They were produced in February 1994, meaning that they will be available for import to Canada soon.
A slight revision was done to the Impreza in 1993, including the rear rotor changing to a solid disk, and the introduction of a 5-door wagon to complement the 4-door sedan. The Impreza was now more luxurious then ever with two engines and more options to choose from
Similarities to the original 4-door sports sedan were still evident, but other then the stripped down racing version, it became more of a comfort car with a sports car kick. In 1993 it also gained in weight, due to all the added options. In late 1994 the car went back to its roots. Subaru added more horsepower while decreasing the curb weight and once again the Impreza become a sales leader. Due to poor sales the sport wagon was discontinued, but in all honesty it was never very popular when compared to the 4-door sedan.
In 2002 the Subaru Impreza WRX was introduced to North America, thus bringing its rivalry with the Evo to heightened levels. The Impreza was a hot seller, despite its limited release on this continent. Many can still be seen, due to Subarus excellent engineering and the longevity the car possesses. The original model is the most sought after, but as it not being available in North America through Subaru, the first generation Impreza is very rare.
Now Canada can share what every other continent shares, the thrill of the first Impreza WRX through importation.
Due to the Impreza being sold in Europe, E-Code headlights are widely available and easy to install. As with all cars the Impreza also needs daytime running lights, front amber side markers and red rear side markers are needed.
