The Diahatsu Hijet is one of the most common Kei trucks made in Japan. Daihatsu specializes in economy vehicles and their Kei trucks are highly regarded.
Daihatsu is a subsidiary of Toyota. High build quality and reliability are positive attributes.
Fuel Economy Testing:
We wanted to know just how good these little trucks were when it comes to fuel economy in the real world.
For our test, we drove this Hijet from North Vancouver, to Langley, and back to Burnaby. Highways speeds of over 100+kph were achieved (surprisingly quite easily), with an estimated average of 80kph while on the highway, and a total distance covered of 86.5km.
The engine does rev quite high during highway driving, but it is an extremely small displacement engine, more akin to a motorcycle than our typical car. Ask any motorcycle rider and they will confirm their engines rev at over double the rpms of the average car.
The good news, this engine is far less than half the size, so it still sips the fuel. In fact, upon refueling, I was caught by surprise and my shoes were the unfortunate victim as the tank splashed full after less than 5L (about 6 seconds of filling), so our numbers are slightly lower than they should be depending on how much fuel we spilled.
Here are the results:
Distance traveled: 86.5km
Fuel consumed: 4.73L ($4.06 @ 85.9/L)
Fuel consumption (Highway): 5.46 L/100KM (43+ MPG)
Considering these vehicles are not meant for high speed highway driving, we\'re very confident the city fuel consumption will be significantly better, considering that is what this vehicle was specifically designed for.
