The initials MR2 are said to stand for mid engine, rear wheel drive, two seater. The Toyota MR2 was the first mid engine car to be mass produced from Japan.

The second generation (Mark II) MR2 was produced from 1990-1999 and featured improvements over the previous generation such as a longer, wider wheelbase and smoother body lines. Other new features included an optional turbo charged model which produced 220hp!  The Mark II MR2 was sold with a conventional hardtop, with the option of a moonroof or a removable T top which can be prone to leaking after several years of use.

The suspension of the Mark II MR2 was revamped to be more aggressive mimicking the suspension characteristics of a true supercar. This change also deterred less experienced drivers as the suspension setup was more prone to oversteer resulting in a spin if the car was pushed beyond its limits of grip in a corner. Upgrading to wider rear tires helps to cancel out the oversteer characteristic.

At low speeds (non highway) the MR2 is tight and very well composed. When cruising on the highway the tight ratio steering is amplified, it virtually pounces from lane to lane. This outstanding turning sensation is credited to the mid engine layout of this sport compact.

You can definitely sense the greatness of this engine layout and suspension geometry when behind the wheel of an MR2. This truly is a drivers car which begs for the twisties or in most city folks cases a big empty parking lot or a nice long highway on ramp.

Compliance has recently become an issue with all imported vehicles in BC.

Typical Compliance parts required for the Toyota MR2:

• DOT/SAE Compliant Headlights
• Daytime Running Light Module (In stock)
• Front sidemarkers replaced with OEM USDM markers
• Rear markers replaced with the red OEM USDM ones.
• DOT Compliant Tires
  

Because the Toyota MR2 was sold in North America the headlights and taillights from a USDM MR2 should be easy to find and install. These parts are required to meet the regulations set forth by the CVSE (Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement). Photographic proof of compliance is required prior to registration in BC.
