Mazda AZ-1 | Autozam AZ-1
Written by Warren Mok (Enthusiast)
Mazda Motor Corporation launched three new brands in the late 1980's in an attempt to diversify the Japanese market. These three divisions were called Eunos, Efini, and Autozam. The Autozam brand is known for its development of subcompact and ultracompact "Kei" cars.Their line-up included the Autozam AZ-1, orignally designed and manufactured by Suzuki, turned out to be a stunner at the 1990 Tokyo Motor Show. It surprised the audience with its bold, and futuristic design.
The AZ-1 was considered as the model for future micro super-cars.
Designers created the AZ-1 and made it fit right in to the Japanese Ultra Compact (aka Kei Car) profile. It weighs in at 720kg, and measures 130in long and 55in wide. The AZ-1 is a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive sports coupe, charcterized by its bold styling. It has a very noticable mid-sized hood-scoop in the front, with headlights shaped as a pair of bold bug eyes engraved into the body. The side view features a set of daring gull-winged doors. Not only does it look intimidating, standing out from the fellow "Kei" cars, but it also proves to be quite handy in tight parking situations.
Under the hood it is powered by a 3-cylinder, DOHC, 657cc, turbocharged ‘F6A’. The AZ-1 only was available with a 5-speed manual transmission.
The AZ-1 proved to be worthy of its fame at the 1990 Tokyo Motor show. It was put in production from 1992-1994 with a total of 4400 ever produced, making this car quite the rarity.
Suzuki Cara:
The Suzuki Cara was a rebadged Mazda Autozam AZ-1 that was also sold in the early 1990's. he only difference of note between the Mazda and its Suzuki twin was the addition of fog lamps to the Cara.
Only around 400 Caras were built between 1992–94.
